Young Leaders Society (YLS) strives to inspire, educate, and empower young leaders in central New Mexico to share their time, talent and resources to effect lasting change in their community.
YLS members are a network of passionate, community-minded young professionals who want to connect with like-minded men and women, serve their community, and become leaders among their peers in philanthropic giving.
The Young Leaders Society is designed for a new generation of community leaders between the ages of 21 and 45 who want to make a difference. As a member, you'll enjoy exclusive opportunities to network with other young leaders, volunteer for community projects, invest in local programs, and lead by example. Membership is extended to individuals or couples who:
- Wish to share their time and talent to effect lasting change in central New Mexico
- Contribute to United Way of Central New Mexico a combined household gift of $500 or more
- Are 45 years old or younger
Check out who serves on the YLS Council, and print out an overview to share with friends! We also have a convenient online form to nominate yourself or someone else for a council or committee position with YLS.

YLS High School Initiative Fund
United Way of Central New Mexico’s Young Leaders Society High School Initiative Fund is focused on assisting, inspiring, and empowering youth (aged 13-18) to transition into adulthood and to develop into our future community leaders. The 2015-16 grants were awarded to those agencies that meet one or more of these three focus areas in Bernalillo, Sandoval, Torrance and Valencia counties:
- Encouraging and inspiring the continued growth and success of young leaders
- Support educational needs
- Provide life skills
- Inspire community involvement

YLS Youth Leadership Endowment
The YLS Youth Leadership Endowment, thanks to the vision and generosity of 2015 Council Chair Tobe Phelps, will ensure that the work YLS does today will carry on with a legacy. The endowment will provide perpetual funding for YLS' annual grants to programs designed to assist, inspire and empower high school youth as they transition into adulthood and develop into our future leaders.
The YLS Youth Leadership Endowment, held at the Albuquerque Community Foundation, will grow through gifts from other visionary YLS members and investments. As soon as it reaches $10,000, it will begin providing annual distributions to the YLS High School Initiative Fund. The principal, however, continues to grow, creating a long-term financial resource.
You can visit the YLS donation page now to give to the YLS Youth Leadership Endowment. Or, you may wish to take advantage of UWCNM's unique matching offer, wherein we double your $5,000 gift to your own endowment fund that can be part of the YLS endowment. The $5,000 may be paid in over five years, so a gift of $1,000 per year for five years will establish your $10,000 fund, named as you wish. Annual distributions from your YLS Youth Leadership Endowment fund will support YLS High School Initiative Fund grants in perpetuity. Please contact Larry Strickland for more information about this program.
Help us reach the $10,000 endowment threshold in 2017!
